Call to Action
In September, the International Motor Show (IAA) will be held in Munich for the third time. Public spaces in the city are being misused as large advertising spaces. While all civil society protests in recent years have been ignored, the city has given more space to the car lobby “Association of the Automotive Industry.” Social initiatives are not only receiving no more funding, but also virtually no space. Luxury cars that only the wealthy can afford are being exhibited in our public spaces. At the same time, many people in Munich no longer know how to pay their rent. With the IAA, the shaken automotive industry is trying to polish its image back to its former glory, boost the automotive business, and get people excited about a form of mobility that is leading us into deep crises.
Because the IAA is not just a car show. It is a symbol of profit maximization at the expense of people and the environment. Behind the IAA are corporate owners and executives who are making a fortune from crises that they themselves helped to cause. Their product, the car, and the infrastructure required for it have contributed to the global climate crisis. While forests and houses are burning, entire towns are flooded, and crops are destroyed around the world, those responsible for the crisis are counting their dividends. Fossil fuels are burned, resources are exploited, forests are cut down, land is sealed, and the air is polluted for the sake of automobility. Railways and public transport, which are real alternatives to cars, continue to be cut back and some tracks are being dismantled, making public transport unreliable and too expensive for many people—many commuters are forced to rely on cars against their will. Electric cars are not an alternative: people in the Global South are being driven from their homes to extract the necessary raw materials, environmental toxins from the mines are polluting their drinking water, and low labor standards are endangering workers and even leading to deaths. All for the success of BMW, Daimler, VW, and Co. Corporate management is passing on the crises they have created to wage earners through temporary work and layoffs. In order to continue to generate returns despite a lack of technological progress, various plants are being closed down.
However, a transformation of the automotive industry towards socially useful and climate-neutral products such as buses and trains is allegedly not possible.
We stand for a comprehensive change in these conditions!
- Sustainable, barrier-free, and free mobility for all: buses, trains, trams, etc.!
- Public spaces for the needs of Munich residents: playgrounds, meeting and learning places, open spaces, city gardens, wilderness, culture
- Largely car-free cities with short distances
- Renaturation of sealed areas
- No further motorway construction or expansion
- Ecological and socially just transformation of the automotive industry
In summary: a world of needs instead of profits, a world of human rights instead of exploitation of other countries – a world of (climate) justice instead of capitalism! A world without the IAA!
Let’s show on September 13 at Karolinenplatz: We no longer want to take a back seat while corporate executives and major shareholders continue to generate excessive wealth for themselves!
